Many Many moons ago when Maori ruled the land there was a chief named Te Rauparaha. Te Rauparaha was the fierce chief of Ngati Toa. Te Rauparaha had fierce enemies that wanted to kill him. Te Rauparaha decided to journey to find Kaha warriors That would help him In his battles.
At one of the Villages that Te Rauparaha went to there was a villager that said go to Lake Rotoaira they will protect you . So Te Rauparaha Journeyed to Lake Rotoaira. When he arrived at Lake Rotoaira and meet chief Te wharerangi. Chief Te wharerangi told him to go to the potato pit. they will never find you there. Garding the pit was a Kaha Wahine.
After a while Te Rauparaha enemies arrived. All Te Rauparaha could hear was footsteps and voices of enemies. Te Rauparaha whispered to himself, will I die? Will I die? Will I live? Will I live? Ka mate Ka mate ka ora ka ora. After a while Te Rauparaha could not hear his enemies so he climbed out of the pit and went home.
At Ngati Toa Te Rauparaha told them all about the pit and who he said will I die? Will I die? Will I live? Will I live? Ka mate Ka mate ka ora ka ora. They repeated it.
By doing the haka is how to tell the story. They have thought all the way until you.
Te Whiti Te Ra!
